The Numerals

ቁጥሮች — the numbers.

Ge'ez numerals have no zero and no place-value. Each glyph carries its own weight — units, tens, hundreds, ten-thousands. Tap to hear how it sounds in Amharic.

How it works

Numbers are built additively. ፳፩ reads as twenty + one (21).፻፳፭ is one hundred + twenty + five (125). There is no symbol for zero, and numerals are traditionally framed with horizontal lines above and below in formal text.
